Somehow golf fails to appear on any of the exhaustive lists of contributions society made by Virginia's Thomas Jefferson. If he had played golf, however, he certainly would have played - if not designed - a course like Birdwood. Located at the renowned Boar's Head Inn, Birdwood is like Charlottesville itself - vibrant and sophisticated, with plenty of pleasant surprises around every turn, and absolutely beautiful. In fact, you don't need a great golf swing or a low handicap to appreciate sensational golf in this remarkable setting, nestled in the rolling foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.
Work began on Birdwood in the early 1980's when the University of Virginia commissioned landscape architect and course designer Lindsay Ervin to assess, shape, and mold this incredible piece of real estate into a golf course. Perhaps best known for taking a relatively low-key approach to design, Ervin chose to respect Birdwood's native topography, relying upon existing trees, shrubs, streams, ponds, and angled hillsides to carve out 18 holes. The result is a course that challenges and charms.
Birdwood is perennially ranked by Golf Digest as one of the top ten university courses in the United States, and has earned Washington Golf Monthly's rating as one of the Mid-Atlantic's top 100. A staff of PGA-certified professionals offers the finest individual and group instruction and each year Boar's Head Inn hosts a popular Golf School for Women, featuring guest professionals from the LPGA Tour. Birdwood continues as the UVA golf team's home course, but is open to the public and has become a regional favorite for its beauty and significant challenge.
