The Morven Summer Institute
August 25, 2011
The Morven Summer Institute is a unique and intensive summer academic program which is rooted in interdisciplinary, place-based learning. The inaugural MSI took place for four-weeks, from May 16 to June 9, 2011 and was held on the grounds of Morven Farm. The program was open to UVA undergraduates and graduate students, as well as students enrolled at other colleges or universities. Like Study Abroad, but in Charlottesville, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a distinctive learning environment for a novel environmental education. The 2012 Morven Summer Institute will build upon the model developed for the 2011 MSI, and will continue to explore themes of sustainability and innovative thinking. Specifically, the MSI 2012 courses will focus on the relationship between a growing economy and rural preservation, and will draw from several different knowledge bases throughout the University.
