Working closely with the University of Virginia's Development Office, the University of Virginia Foundation serves the University by providing a single point of contact to evaluate, accept, process, manage, and dispose of real property gifts. As a non-profit entity, the Foundation is able to offer a donor the tax benefits of charitable gifts while maintaining the flexibility required to manage and dispose of this type of asset.
Since 1992, the University of Virginia Foundation has processed over $60,000,000 in real estate gifts. These gifts have included a variety of different types of property: homes, estates, farms, condominiums, apartment buildings, restaurants, vacant land, and vacation property.
The guiding document for this activity is the Real Estate Gift Policy. Potential donors should begin by contacting the Development Office, which will then work with the individual donor to tailor the gift to maximize the benefit both to the donor and to the University of Virginia. The Development Office enlists the assistance of the University of Virginia Foundation to analyze and process these gifts.
