The
University of Virginia Research Park
is a 562-acre, 3-million-square-foot, fully masterplanned, mixed-use
development zoned for office, light industry, hotel/conference center,
laboratory/medical/pharmaceutical, and retail/support commercial
uses. In
designing the Park, the University of Virginia Foundation developed
plans for a people-oriented corporate village to meet the needs
of todays and tomorrowís businesses in a setting of
unmatched natural beauty. The Park represents an evolution in development
planning, uniting the harmony and community of Jeffersons
Academical Village with a fully functioning office and research
environment.
Unlike
many research parks that lack a sense of place, the University of
Virginia Research Park will feature a traditional village center,
featuring a plaza, boulevards, cafes, green spaces, hotel, conference
facilities, and amenities for all of the Parks users to enjoy.
Yet, the research park also is a technologically advanced interactive
community where businesses,
researchers, faculty, families, and members of the community can
come together to work and socialize.
The
developed areas include architectural qualities and details reminiscent
of Jeffersons own designs. Flexible, yet elegantly defined
design guidelines will help to assure the fulfillment of this forward-looking
vision. The nationally acclaimed land-planning firm of Duany Plater-Zyberk
& Company and the Charlottesville firm of Mitchell/Matthews
Architects teamed
to gather the best ideas from developments throughout the country
and then have applied them to this project. While 3 million square
feet have been allotted for development, at least 200 of the 562
acres will remain pristine and undeveloped, thus retaining a pleasing
and refreshing rural environment.
