Town
Center Two Building Underway
The
University of Virginia Foundation recently began site
work for the Town Center Two building, located across
the street from the Town Center One building and on
the corner of Research Park Boulevard and Lewis &
CLark Drive. Projected completion is August, 2006.
The 84,000 square feet building will be the seventh
building in the Park and will provide Class A office
space for both existing tenant expansions and new companies
entering the marketplace.

UVA
Surpasses $300 Milllion in R&D
University
of Virginia researchers topped $300 million in grants
and contracts during the 2004-2005 fiscal year, a milestone
in the University's drive to upgrade its research enterprise.
When the final numbers are tallied, the total amount
of research support could reach as high as $313 million.
Said R. Ariel Gomez, vice president for research and
graduate studies: "The University has made substantial
investments in research, and we have plans for the short-
and long-term future that involve the retention of our
best faculty, attracting outstanding internationally
recognized scientists and the best students, coupled
with the construction of the most modern research facilities
available today and the upgrade of our existing ones."

Renowned
Engineer Joins University
Renowned
Engineer Joe C. Campbell was appointed to UVA faculty.
He is a renowned innovator in electrical engineering
and nanotechnology and widely credited for having developed
the modern-day detectors of laser light used in fiber
optics systems in telephone and other telecommunication
systems, has been appointed as the Lucien Carr III Professor
of Engineering and Applied Science at the University
of Virginia. This appointment is the first of 10 National
Academies-level researchers hired by UVA in the BoV's
$126 million initiative to enhance science and technology.

National
Leader in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
Tapped to Lead Internal Medicine at UVA
Robert
M. Strieter, M.D., one of the nations top pulmonary
clinicians and scientists, has been appointed Chairman
of the Department of Internal Medicine of the University
of Virginia Health System. Dr. Strieter comes to UVa.
from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University
of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he currently
serves as professor of medicine, pathology, pediatrics,
chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care
Medicine and vice chair of the Department of Medicine
for Hospitalist Programs. Dr. Strieter will begin his
appointment on July 1, 2006.

Virginia
Unemployment Figures Improve
Initial
unemployment claims in the state have dropped over recent
months. In November, the six-month moving average for
initial claims fell just below 22,000, the lowest level
since September 2000. The number of initial applicants
for unemployment insurance has fallen from a year ago.
For the year ending with November 2005, initial claims
decreased by 12.0 percent (six-month average).
