Faculty
at the University
have not been content merely to apply new information technology
to further their own investigations. They have been quick to make
their discoveries in such fields as medicine and engineering available
so that they can be harnessed to improve the well-being of the general
public. Government agencies have expressed their confidence in the
quality and productivity of faculty research by granting funds for
over $280 million in 2006. Various federal and privately funded
projects in engineering, science, education, and medicine are of
particular note. Examples include:
| |
Healing
of Tendon Injuries (sponsor - MicroAire Surgical Instruments) |
| |
Carbon

Other
noteworthy discoveries took place in the Humanities and Computer Science
areas. The ability to convert information into the digital language
easily understood by computers has dramatically enhanced the University's
ability to disseminate knowledge. Digitizing allows the University
of Virginia to store sound, images, film, and texts compactly, combine
them seamlessly, and distribute them economically. Thanks to the expertise
at the University of Virginia, faculty members can readily create
multimedia presentations that heighten the effectiveness of classroom
teaching. At the same time, digital information conveyed on the Internet
allows us to make available the resources of the University to the
citizens of the commonwealth, the nation, and of the world.
The artifacts of the information age -- the computers, fiberoptic
cables, and networked printers -- are everywhere in evidence at the
University of Virginia, and their effects on the research enterprise
are pervasive. Our researchers are using computers to tackle problems
of unprecedented complexity and scope, while developing new methods
to collaborate with other researchers at distant institutions.
The Patent Foundation is
a not-for-profit corporation which evaluates the intellectual property
value and commercial potential of inventions made in the course of
University of Virginia research, and where warranted, seeks to patent
those inventions and license them to industry. The Patent Foundation
thus serves to promote the entry of University of Virginia-developed
technologies into the commercial marketplace, and to generate royalties
which are then used to fund further research. The Patent Foundation
currently evaluates over 100 inventions per year. The Patent Foundation
also supports and encourages local economic development by licensing
to established and newly formed local companies, and serves as a University-wide
resource for information about intellectual property and licensing.
The Patent Foundation has also recently received funding from Virginias
Center for Innovative Technology to launch a new program for the copyright
protection and licensing of University-developed computer software.

Spinner
Technologies, Inc. is a for-profit subsidiary of the Patent
Foundation and is designed to assist UVA faculty spin off new companies
from their research. Spinner offers numerous business start-up services,
including: trademark searches and corporate name registration, referrals
to appropriate sources of funding, business negotiations, drafting
business plans, guidance with U.Va. policies, and lab space. As
compensation for its services, Spinner retains a small equity stake
