Founded
in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson,
the University of Virginia isconsistently ranked by U.S. News
& World Report as #2 of the nations top public
universities. With 13,636 undergraduates, 6,554 graduate and first
professional students, 644 on-grounds continuing education students,
and 2,140 faculty members, this distinguished institution has ten
degree-granting schools, including the Colgate Darden Graduate School
of Business Administration, the School of Engineering and Applied
Science, the School of Law, and the School of Medicine.
The
University of Virginia is one of the premier research institutions
in the world, with faculty of international stature in a host of
fields. The University has an outstanding record for attracting
external funding for research. In 2007, sponsored research funding
topped $310 million, continuing a steadily increasing growth trend.
